Perinatal support and education for expecting families and birth professionals Background & Bio Autumn Bessire Tattenham, CD, CLC, NCS Credentials I'm a trauma-informed, certified birth and postpartum doula, an INA (International Nanny Association) credentialed newborn care specialist (NCS), a certified lactation counselor (CLC), and an Evidence Based Birth® Instructor. I have decades of experience in perinatal care and am exceptionally skillful at guiding first-time parents through pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and the earliest phase of their babies' lives. As a life-long learner, besides my doula, newborn care, and lactation certifications, I hold certifications in pediatric CPR and first aid, Spinning Babies birth practices, pediatric sleep shaping, managing multiples, postpartum mood disorders, and infant loss/bereavement support. I have taken extra steps, received an NCS certificate from CACHE, formerly known as the famed National Nursery Examinations Board (NNEB) in the UK, and completed Level I-III certification in Relationship Foundations for new parents with Elly Taylor of Becoming Us out of Sydney, Australia. I'm an official Hypno-Doula through Hypnobabies® and a current professional member of Evidenced Based Birth®, Postpartum Support International (PSI), the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA), the International Nanny Association, and the Newborn Care Specialist Association (NCSA). I'm a Greater San Diego Birth Collective member and a member of the Birth Network of Monterey County. I volunteered for several years as a birth doula and doula mentor with the UCSD Hearts and Hands program. I'm a certified Parenthood Tour Guide through Becoming Us, which allows me to provide relationship-informed guidance and a deeper level of family-centered support to the people who choose me as their doula. In April 2024, I completed a 9-week mastermind under Jojo Hogan, the founder of the Slow Postpartum Movement, to further my understanding of international practices in postpartum care. This year, I became an Evidence Based Birth® Instructor, and can now offer classes to expecting parents and continuing education workshops to doulas, nurses, midwives, and physicians. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area as the oldest in a family of six kids, raised my three (now grown and flown) children there, and came to San Diego in 2021 after living for four years along Monterey Bay. Now, I split my time between both beautiful locales. Long before I started Sweet Peas, I had a career in the medical field as a radiology technologist. I ran my own children's portraiture business for a while before becoming a nanny and eventually a newborn care specialist. These days, when I'm not busy helping new families transition to life with a newborn or teaching professionals the latest evidence on topics related to perinatal care, I'm writing, practicing yoga, studying herbal medicine, hanging out with my husband, Ian, and our dog, Sable, and enjoying all that the California Coast offers. In January of 2024, I became a grandma. Training & Certifications A Little More About Me My Approach My passion is to use my extensive training and experience to ensure that new families get reliable information and unbiased support right from the beginning of their parenting journeys. Whether working one-on-one with a new or expecting parent, teaching group childbirth classes, or holding workshops for other birth professionals, I intend to reduce overall perinatal stress and increase the safety, enjoyment, and well-being of everyone involved as new parents welcome their babies into the world! But also made me think of myself and my recovery. She gave more than practical knowledge and became a friend I was excited to see. She provided nourishing meals and supportive conversation that empowered my postpartum journey. Additionally, Autumn was able to adapt her teaching styles to both my and my husband’s personality knowing we needed different support. We both came to value our individual time with her." -Lauren, Birth & Postpartum Client "As doulas we hold a unique position in the birth space we have been invited into and I had the honor of witnessing firsthand Autumn compassionately assisting many birthing people and their family members. Your common questions about the services Sweet Peas offers, answered! Frequently Asked Questions About the Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class Can’t I educate myself online using search engines and videos? So much of what you find online is either incomplete or inaccurate! The benefit of the Evidence-Based Birth® Childbirth Class is that we curate the best evidence-based information and engage you and your partner in the learning process. Won't my doctors and nurses tell me what to do? Routine practices in some hospitals are still about 15 to 20 years behind the research, and there is so much pressure to conform to traditions that might not be in your best interests. We will teach you and your partner how to be your own advocate—a skill you can use for the rest of your life! My friends told me that taking a childbirth class is a waste of time. Is that true? There are a lot of poor-quality classes out there that have given childbirth education a bad reputation. The founder of Evidence Based Birth®, Rebecca Dekker, PhD, RN, APRN, knows how to make classes exciting for young adults. The end result is a class that is motivating and SO much fun to participate in. You will learn more than you could ever imagine! What will I actually learn in this class that could be of use to me? Our students are most excited to learn about the entire toolkit of comfort measures for labor. We cover pain management techniques like massage, water immersion, upright birthing positions, acupressure, music therapy, and deep breathing, just to name a few. When labor starts, you and your partner will be ready! About My Postpartum Support Services Do you take insurance? At this time, I operate my private practice without accepting insurance. This allows me to focus on providing personalized care tailored to your needs. If you have any questions or would like to discuss payment options, please feel free to reach out. Looking for another way to pay? With BeHerVillage you can add my services to your registry and encourage your family and friends to help pay for it! Do you do overnight postpartum shifts? While I'm happy to care for infants as parents grab a much-needed nap, I do not provide overnight services. I serve clients as early as 6 AM and as late as 11 PM. I believe families benefit more from my guidance during the day. My focus is on sharing valuable knowledge and practical support to help parents navigate early postpartum recovery and new parenthood while present and engaged. I want to ensure that you have the tools and resources you need to thrive as a family once I am no longer working with you. How much does your support cost? I offer flexible packages starting at $70 per hour, with no hourly minimum required. Parents have the freedom to customize a package of total hours that best fits their needs and budgets. Please note that a 50% non-refundable retainer of the total service fee is due at signing to secure your spot on my calendar. What areas do you serve? I currently serve families in-person for postpartum support in North San Diego County, offering classes and workshops in both San Diego and Monterey Counties. Additionally, I provide virtual support for families no matter where you are located.
